Overview of Program Setup

The program setup is the initial stage in the software installation process. The program setup consists of installing the associated files, plug-ins, drivers, and other related program assets so that the software can be executed by the operating system. Most programs have some form of guided process in which to follow in order to get the software fully installed. Correcting the setting up of a program can mean the difference between absolutely fantastic software, and software that is full of errors and installation problems.

Beginning in the early 1990s, most software publishers began using user-friendly, guided installation interfaces such as Installshield. With more recent Windows operating systems, most software only asks you a few simple questions, such as where you want the file to be located, and which specific files you want to be installed through the setup process.

Most of the time, these setups include default locations to save the software and include the option of having the program icon placed on your desktop. Along with the basic program setup, some programs will offer additional setup options designed to offer flexibility and control for more advanced users.

What Problems are Associated with Program Setup?

The problems associated with the program setup can be enormous. If a program is trying to locate files in a place that does not exist, the entire program can completely collapse. That is why proper installation procedures must be used in order to get the program set up on your computer.

In the event that the program is not set up properly, usually, the Windows operating system will not be able to run the program. These malfunctions result in errors such as “DLL is missing”, or other program errors, preventing the software from loading.

Also, if the program has not been properly setup, the program can freeze and not allow any form of access, even without showing any obvious form of error to the user. If the program does load, but then freezes during use, Windows will oftentimes display the error message of “Program Not Responding”.

In the event that this occurs, using “Control-Alt-Delete” would be the best course of action to stop the program immediately. If the frozen process isn’t stopped manually, it can freeze the whole computer if it is not dealt with immediately.
