How To Fix Windows 10 Update Error 0×80096004

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I bought a Lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8 and then I updated it to Windows 10. I always kept by computer updated until I got this error saying that there were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try later. If you keep seeing this error, this (0×80096004) may help when looking for information online or contacting support.” – Juan T., United Kingdom

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: Windows 10 has received mostly positive feedback from people who have updating from Windows 7 or Windows 8. Although, Windows is not perfect. It has problems just like any other software, but luckily most of these problems can be fixed easily.

Problem

When trying to update Windows 10, it shows the error 0×80096004 and tells the user to look for help online or contact customer support. It is also known as the TRUST_E_CERT_SIGNATURE error and it is caused by an incorrect certificate.

Solution

Here are some ways to fix the 0×80096004 error in a Windows 10 update.

Open Port 443 or 80 In the Firewall to Fix The 0×80096004 Error

This error is also known as the trust_e_cert_signature error. It is an invalid certificate error that can be fixed by opening ports 443 and port 80 in the firewall for outbound traffic.

Disable The Anti-Virus Firewall

There are two types of Firewalls. One is the firewall in your WiFi/Ethernet router, and the other is the software firewall in your antivirus program. You can check to see if the anti-virus program is being problematic by disabling the anti-virus and trying to perform the Windows update again. If this doesn’t help, then you will need to change firewall settings on your WiFi / Ethernet router.

Change Firewall Settings In the Router’s Firewall

This can be a bit complicated at times, so you have to be a little more careful when doing this. How to change firewall settings on your WiFi / Ethernet router will differ from others because there are many different models. But, the instructions are not too different for other models.

Make sure to connect to the router using an Ethernet cable before starting. You will also need to know the IP address of the router to access its settings. Note that if you make a mistake then you can still reset the router’s settings by pressing and holding a reset button on the router, but it can reset all settings so be careful and make a backup of the settings before you start changing anything. Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.

Happy Computing! :)
