Trayapp Troubleshooting
Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I am having problems with Trayapp and wondering how to fix it?” - Adrian M., USA
Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.
Wally’s Answer:
Overview of Trayapp
Trayapp is a critical component of many Hewlett Packard software applications. Whenever a HP printer, fax or scanner is installed on a computer, Trayapp is also installed. Trayapp helps control the drivers for these peripherals and is included in the programs the computer runs when it is started.
Trayapp uses very few resources and does not require enough processing power when idle to slow a computer’s performance. There are no visible signs of Trayapp running on a computer. There is no way for a user to interact with or modify Trayapp because it has no user interface and does create an icon to display in the system tray.
Trayapp is also a popular name for many Trojan programs because the name sounds like a process or application that would normally be part of a Windows operating system. None of the currently supported operating systems have a process, application or file named Trayapp.
Users become aware of Trayapp existing on their computer as a result of discovering a malware infection or an error occurring with their installed HP product.
What Problems are Associated with Trayapp?
When users discover they have malware on their computer, and one of the programs is named Trayapp, it is important to use trusted malware removal software rather than trying to remove the infection manually.
Because the malware is using the same name as a trusted program, it is easy to mistakenly remove a program that is critical to making the computer and its HP peripherals like printers, scanners and faxes work properly. Removing the wrong program can make the computer unstable and result in freezing or crashes.
Users also experience problems with the legitimate Trayapp program. These most often are realized when a pop-up window appears requiring the user to install an HP product and informs the user it cannot find the Trayapp.msi file. The installation wizard directs the user to browse for the program or insert the appropriate disk. Even if the user inserts the HP installation disk, the program cannot be found.
This usually occurs when the HP product’s registry key has become corrupted. Using the RegEdit utility to reset the registry key will resolve the problem.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the application will also prevent the pop-up window from reappearing.

Is Your PC Healthy?
I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.
Happy Computing!
