How To Fix Error Code 10 in Windows Device Manager

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, Good evening, I bought a Delock Adapter USB 2.0 DVI / VGA. The first time it worked. The second time, the 2 screen no longer ran at all. After looking a bit, I found out that there is a code 10 error. I have reinstalled the driver several times and also checked all the drivers. I have Windows 10 as the operating system.” (Translated) – B R., Germany

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: There are times when you’re using a new device with your computer and it just won’t install correctly. This can also start happening after upgrading to a new version of Windows. Sometimes this is due to code 10.

Problem

A device is not working. The user looks in the Device Manager and finds that there is a yellow triangle on the device in question. Right-clicking and looking in the Properties reveals the following error message:

The device cannot start. (Code 10)

Look at the list of devices, one of them has a Yellow Triangle on it. Note the name of the device and search for its driver online. Only download drivers from the official manufacturer’s website.

Make sure to download the driver for the correct device model and the correct version of Windows. Most Windows 7 drivers should work find on computers running Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Try Using A Different USB Port

If it is a USB device, then you can try using another USB port.

Try Turning it On and Off Again

Try restarting the computer. After that, try using the device again. This time in a different USB port.

Try Using The Device on Another Computer

Using the device on a different computer is another way to confirm if the device and driver or working.

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.
