“Hi Wally, I am using Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit on my computer. When I try to activate it using the activation link, it gives me error 0x8007007B ??” – Zachary K., USA

“Hi Wally, I installed Windows 8 Enterprise 64bit. I got it from TechNet. Whenever I try to activate it, it tells me to activate later. Its not letting me change the activation key.” – Jeffrey E., USA

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: Although its rare, some users have encountered problems in activating their copy of Windows 8. These errors may happen when you are upgrading your computer’s operating system from an older version of Windows to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Here are some solutions to your Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 activation problems.

Activate Windows 8 Enterprise 64x (error 0x8007007B)

If you’re getting the 0x8007007B error while trying to activate Windows 8, you should try activating it using the SLUI 3 command. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate your Windows 8 product key. You should have your Technet or MSDN product key at hand.
  2. Press Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog box.
  3. Type in SLUI 3 and press Enter. (The activation Window should appear).

  4. In the activation, window type the product key and click Activate.

Can’t activate Windows 8 (can’t change the product key)

This problem is similar to the last one. You have a copy of Windows 8 Enterprise x64 installed on your computer but you can’t activate it. The default product key appears in the system dialog-box but Windows isn’t activated, and Windows doesn’t prompt you for an activation key either.

Follow these steps to activate Windows 8:

  1. Press the Windows Key to get to the Metro screen, and start typing cmdIf you are using Windows RT, swipe from the right side of the screen and tap Search on the charms bar to get to the search bar.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt from the search results and click Run as administrator.
Activate Windows 8 - cmd - Run as administrator - WindowsWally
  3. In the Command Prompt window, run the following command
    slmgr -ipk xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
(here the xxxx is your product key)
Activate Windows 8 - cmd - Run as administrator - slmgr -ipk - WindowsWally

Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.
