How To Fix The Ntoskrnl.exe Error in Windows 10

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I am getting very frequent BSODs on my laptop computer which seems to be caused by the ntoskrnl.exe file.” – Steven J., USA

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: Blue screen screen errors are almost never fun to deal with. The error appears out of nowhere and shows a blue screen with a confusing error message on it. The first thing you can do is to go online and try to find a solution to this problem. Keep reading to learn how to fix the ntoskrnl.exe error.

Problem

The ntoskrnl.exe error appears on the screen and the computer restarts.

Cause

This error can be caused by corrupt drivers, a damaged hard drive, or corrupt system files.

Solution

Here are some ways to fix the ntoskrnl.exe error in Windows 10:

Update Device Drivers To Fix The Ntoskrnl.exe Error

You can update device drivers by going to your computer manufacturer’s website and downloading the drivers from there. You can also use a driver update utility like DriverDoc to download and install driver updates for you.

A Damaged Hard Drive

A damaged hard drive can cause this problem as well. One way to check if the hard drive is working correctly is to use CrystalDiskInfo to read the hard drive’s SMART log. If you’re not able to get into the Windows environment, then you can try starting Windows 10 in safe mode by using these instructions.

You should also be able to start a hard drive diagnostics scan without starting Windows. It is available in many computers, and you can run it from the BIOS/UEFI settings. Restart the computer and pay attention to the instructions on the screen. It may tell you to press a button (e.g. Esc, F2, etc) to see more options. Your goal is to find the diagnostics settings and run the hard drive diagnostics scan. If the hard drive does not pass the diagnostics test, then get it replaced.

A Damaged RAM

Use Memtest to check if the RAM is working correctly. If the RAM is not working correctly then get it replaced. If you’re not able to start Windows normally, then try starting Windows 10 in safe mode.

Fix The Registry Using WinThruster

Registry errors can also cause blue screen errors. Try using WinThruster to scan the computer for registry errors. It also makes the computer run smoother by fixing PC errors. Please make a system restore point prior to scanning the registry for the first time.

Fix Corrupt or Damaged System Files

You can easily fix damaged or missing system files using the SFC /scannow command.

  1. In Windows 10, press Windows Key+X and click Command Prompt (Admin)
    Ntoskrnl.exe - WIndowsKey+X - Command Prompt (Admin) - Windows Wally
  2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter to run the command
    Ntoskrnl.exe - sfc scannow - 2 -- Windows Wally

Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.

Happy Computing! :)
