How To Fix Windows 10 Network adapter Problems?

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I’m using Windows 10 on a laptop which is giving me issues with the network. I think it happens when the connection gets really weak. The connection also seems to be Disabled. I can re enable it, but it goes back to being disabled again, for some reason.” – Kristen Y., Canada

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: Network problems can occur due to many different reasons. These problems are usually hardware specific and not software specific. However, troubleshooting network problems to a certain extent from the software is also possible.

Problem

The network adapter is not working for some reason.

Solution

Here are some ways to fix the Windows 10 network driver issue:

Check The Wires And Connections

Some basic things that you should consider checking are as follows:

Make sure that the router and modem are powered on. Also, make sure that the Ethernet cables are properly connected to the router and modem. Look at the Ethernet cables and make sure that they are not damaged.

Reinstall The Network Drivers

In most cases, the network driver is already installed. So, if this is a driver related problem, then we should start by Uninstalling the old driver before installing the new one. But we’ll need to download the right drivers first.

Download The Network Driver

You can download the network drivers by going to your computer manufacturer’s website. Once you’re there, look for your computer’s model and visit its page. You should be able to see latest versions of various drivers for different devices inside the computer. Download the network driver from the website. You will probably need to download the Ethernet and Wireless drivers separately.

Uninstall The Old Network Drivers

You can uninstall the old network drivers by following these steps:

  1. Open the Device Manager, press Windows Key + X > click Device Manager
    Windows 10 - Network Adapter - Windows Key + X - Device Manager -- Windows Wally
  2. Click the arrow next to Network adapters to expand it.

  3. Right-click each item under Network Adapters and click Uninstall to remove it from the computer.

Install Downloaded Network Drivers

Install both the Ethernet and wireless network drivers one-by-one. Restart the computer if prompted to restart. Try connecting to the network again after both drivers are installed.

Running The Windows 10 Troubleshooter

Windows has built-in troubleshooters that you can run to assist you in fixing these problems.

  1. Press the Windows Key and type troubleshoot
  2. Click Troubleshooting
  3. Click the search box > type network > click Network Adapter
Windows 10 - Network Adapter - Troubleshooting - Network Adapter -- Windows Wally
  4. Follow the instructions.

Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.

Happy Computing! :)
