Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I am having problems with Windows Update and wondering how to fix it?” - Mayra H., USA
Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:
- Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
- Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
- Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.
Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Overview of Windows Update
Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft that was implemented by the company with Windows 98. The program updates all of your general operating systems (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7) programs such as Internet Explorer.
Windows Update also updates more critical components of your operating system errors and updates to protect your computer against Malware, a malicious software designed to disrupt the normal operations of your computer and gain information and access to critical systems on it. Security updates are routinely provided on the second Tuesday of each month, and as long as you have an active Internet connection, you are to receiving updates from Microsoft.
Quite often, if you are away from your computer you will be unaware that an update has even occurred. Microsoft has ensured that Windows Update will be as convenient to the users as possible, allowing for you to have the program wait for up to four hours, postponing the update to allow you to save important information. The computer restarts after the update.
During 2008, Windows Update had around 500 Million clients and was processing 350 Million scans per day.
What Problems are Associated with Windows Update?
Nearly everyone will experience a problem with Windows Update at some point or another. Sometimes updates have their own problems and will immediately affect the computer on which the update has been installed, initiating a somewhat frustrating experience.
Driver updates that Microsoft releases can fail to install properly can lead to problems viewing web pages and accessing files. Drivers are programs that allow other, more complex software to interact with your hardware on your computer. Often the reason why these drivers do not install correctly is due to the method by which Windows Update attempts to update your system drivers. Windows Update will scan through a list of drivers that are on your system, and when it detects that your operating system is missing several of the drivers, it can incorrectly install drivers that your operating system does not need. This then causes errors and other related problems that can be very frustrating.
Furthermore, Windows Update will sometimes suggest updates that will just continually fail to install. Occasionally, there are also problems just trying to access the Windows Update site. Most problems associated with Windows Update can be dealt with quite easily by downloading patches offered by Microsoft.

Is Your PC Healthy?
I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.
